Manufacturing variations give the radio-frequency components in each wireless device slightly different characteristics, such as oscillator frequency offset. Like biometric fingerprints, these hardware-dependent characteristics can distinguish one device from another. An RFFI system first enrols reference fingerprints in a database and then identifies a transmitting device by comparing its measured signal characteristics with those references.
